UCP: The Discovery Layer That Makes AI Agents Shop For You

Commerce is being rebuilt for agents. The Universal Commerce Protocol — UCP — is the discovery layer that makes it possible: a standardized way for any AI shopping agent to find what a business sells, understand its prices, and learn how to transact, without a human ever opening a browser.

What UCP Actually Does

UCP is a discovery protocol. It does not process payments or execute transactions — that is the job of downstream protocols like ACP and AP2. What UCP does is solve the first, hardest problem of agentic commerce: how does an AI agent know what you offer?

The mechanism is a manifest published at a well-known endpoint, conventionally /.well-known/ucp. Any agent can fetch this manifest to discover a business's capability profile, inventory feeds, supported transport protocols, and transaction endpoints. It is the agentic-commerce equivalent of robots.txt — a machine-readable declaration of what a business is willing to expose to autonomous buyers.

The Three Building Blocks

Capability profiles & inventory feeds. A UCP manifest declares what categories of goods or services a merchant offers, current availability, and pricing structures. Agents query these feeds to shortlist merchants that can fulfill a request.

REST / MCP / A2A transports. UCP is transport-agnostic. A merchant can expose its commerce surface via REST APIs, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), or Agent-to-Agent (A2A) messaging. The agent negotiates the transport both sides support.

Agent discovery manifest. The /.well-known/ucp file points agents to the endpoints, auth requirements, and protocol versions a business supports — the entry point for every automated shopping interaction.

Why UCP Matters

Governed by Google, UCP is becoming the de facto standard for how AI agents discover merchants. Businesses that publish a UCP manifest make themselves discoverable to the next generation of autonomous buyers — agents embedded in ChatGPT, Gemini, and enterprise procurement systems. Those that don't will be invisible to agentic commerce the way a business without a website was invisible to the search era.

The strategic implication is clear: discovery is no longer a human-interface problem. It is a machine-interface problem, and UCP is its foundation.
